The biggest news in the Open Data world this week is Google’s release of a dataset search tool. As far as I can tell, this tool searches through Open Datasets around the world and provides access to anyone who has any interest.
You can play with the tool here: https://toolbox.google.com/datasetsearch
The power of something like is immense, in being able to more efficiently and effectively connect researchers in the non-profit space with the data they need to enhance their work. However, the tool relies on high quality meta-data (data about the datasets) in order for it to work.
If you release an Open Dataset, always remember to include the metadata which describes what the dataset includes, when it was collected, what fields it contains, etc. Without this metadata, the power of a dataset simply cannot be met.
