One of the challenges I’m encountering in thinking about our path forward with Open Data is how we can go about humanizing and highlighting what our data can show about the communities we serve. In other words, how can we present data in a way that is meaningful?
I recently came across the Canadian Rental Housing Index which does a really great job of providing a comprehensive, yet navigable view of rental housing data and how it connects to people and communities. On top of the run-of-the-mill data tables and maps, it layers on demographic data, community profiles, and videos illustrating stories of renters in communities across the country. It is an incredible resource and reminds me that we have a long way to go when it comes to making our open-data more user friendly.
