Dear Dr. Jean,

When is it appropriate to take a child to talk therapy (if they don’t want to go)?

Dear Anon,

In answer to your first question, an unfortunate reality of parenting and life is that we cannot change anyone’s behaviour except our own. If a child is unwilling to go to talk therapy it is essential that you try and see what the barriers are to it? Does it make your child feel that they are strange or broken or sick? That it is not their problem but someone else and they are the scapegoat? There are many reasons why children refuse and it should be the beginning of discussion, not the end.
